Our history
The story of Bremnes Seashore began in 1937, when a 14‑year‑old Olav Svendsen started trading kelp on Bømlo.
Since then, the business has grown from its small coastal roots to become one of Norway’s largest privately owned aquaculture companies. Through innovation, hard work and an unwavering belief in quality, we have moved from kelp and trout to setting a new standard for world‑class premium salmon. We were early adopters of salmon processing in Norway, and since the 1970s we have developed new methods both at sea and on land. With curiosity and a willingness to explore new solutions, we have built technology and expertise that safeguard quality from the moment the fish swims in the sea until it is packed and ready for delivery. Much has changed since the beginning, but one thing remains constant: we are here to create a future for people along the coast, with ‘Salmon at Heart’ as our foundation — and with care for both nature and the people around us.
1937 - Kelp trade
Olav Svendsen, at only 14 years old, began receiving kelp in Øklandsvågen. This marked the beginning of the journey that would lead to what we know today as a producer of high‑quality salmon.

1946 –> Expansion
After the Second World War, the business was moved to Kvednavikjo on the opposite side of Øklandsvågen. This marked the beginning of a long period of expansion and increased capacity – a development that has continued right up to the present day.

1950-1973 – Tuna
For more than 20 years, there was active fishing for Atlantic bluefin tuna. The tuna was landed at the facility in Kvednavikjo and shipped fresh to Italy and frozen to Japan.
1955-1984 – Spiny dogfish
From the mid‑1950s and for the next 30 years, the spiny dogfish landing station was the largest and most important part of the business. In Kvednavikjo, a freezing facility was built alongside what became the world’s largest receiving station for spiny dogfish.
1960-1980-talet – Trout
The first trials with hatching and farming trout at Goddo laid the foundation for modern aquaculture methods.

1970-talet – Salmon
In the mid‑1970s, Bremnes Seashore began the shift from trout to salmon. What started as a small side activity to the dogfish landing soon grew in importance – but the early years involved plenty of trial and error.

1989 –> Salmon Processing
Bremnes Seafood was established, marking the beginning of Bremnes Seashore’s salmon processing activities. It was one of the first companies of its kind in Norway.
1994 – Live Cold Fish
In 1994, the first facility for live‑chilling salmon was introduced. Together with researchers from the Agricultural University of Ås, Bremnes Seashore discovered that allowing the cold‑blooded salmon to swim in chilled water before harvesting would cool it down and ensure stable, high quality all year round.

1997 – Pre rigor fillets
Following the discovery of live‑chilling, pre‑rigor filleting was developed. By filleting the live‑chilled salmon immediately, rather than letting it mature, we achieved an ultra‑fresh fillet of exceptionally high quality.

2005-2024 – Salma
A collaboration with Tine on a cured salmon sausage paved the way for Norway’s first salmon brand, SALMA. Bremnes Seashore’s unique product quality, combined with TINE’s brand‑building expertise, resulted in the creation of SALMA. The brand was sold to Insula in 2025.

2009 –> BÖMLO
Launched in 2009, the BÖMLO brand builds on our quality innovations and our coastal heritage. It began with whole salmon and later expanded to value‑added products – now recognised by chefs in multiple countries.

2018 –> Large smolt
With the opening of our new RAS facility at Trovåg, the company marked the start of its large‑smolt strategy. Larger smolt shorten the production time in sea sites, reducing the salmon’s exposure to lice, jellyfish, algae and other marine challenges.
